The founding of this country was based on the principle that the government should not have a say as to what we hear, what we think, and what we read. . . .

If Bradley Manning did what he’s accused of, then he’s a hero if mine and I think he did a great service to this country. We’re not in the mess we’re in, in the world, because of too many leaks. . . . I say there should be some secrets. But I also say we invaded Iraq illegally because of a lackof a Bradley Manning at that time.

I came across these words in my twitter stream just as I pondered Jung’s imaginal encounter with “the Anchorite” in the Red Book, in which the two of them discuss the meaning of words.

We are shaped by the spoken and, to even a greater degree,by the written word.

The Anchorite (an inner, imaginal figure) speaks to Jung: “Surely you know that one can read a book many times – perhaps you almost know it by heart, and nevertheless it can be that, when you look again at the lines before you, certain things appear new or even new thoughts occur to you that you did not have before”.

In 1980, in California, Lama Yeshe gave a commentary to the Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) yoga method. This talk is Lama’s introduction to this series and constitutes a wonderful explanation of the fundamentals of tantric practice.

Lama Thubten Yeshe was born in Tibet, educated at Sera Monastic University in Lhasa. In 1959 he fled chinese oppression for India. In 1969 he began teaching Buddhism to westerners at Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1974 began traveling the world to spread the dharma. In 1975 he founded the international Buddhist organization, the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition.

As I was flying, I became aware of high walls around me. Even though I was in the sky, I could not fly over these walls. There were no gates or doors or windows to exit from or enter into. The walls contained all this vastness : the hills, the valleys and sky. I continued flying around and somehow, realised that the enclosed area was u-shaped and I was no longer aware of what was outside the space I was in.

I flew around the u-shaped ‘structure’ and suddenly became aware of a man on the ground way down below and I swooped in his direction. He opened a door and he went through it. In that instant, I awoke.

Tadasana
Give your attention to mastering Tadasana from the very beginning of your practice. Practice Tadasana in every line you have to wait in, at the grocery store, in the ticket line at the theater, etc. All the points learned from Tadasana should be applied in each of the other asanas. In each pose, keep asking yourself, “Is there Tadasana in this body part, in this body part,” and so on.

Savasana
End each yoga session with Savasana. In Savasana, our bodies integrate and assimilate what we have just practiced. This pose is about letting go completely. Proper relaxation is essential for the health of our mind and body and for clarity of thought for making good choices.

It is Plato’s account of Socrates’s defense at his trial in 399 BC – the word ‘apology’ comes from the Greek word for ‘defense-speech’ and does not mean what we would think of as an apology. In The Apology, Plato outlines some of Socrates’s most famous philosophical ideas: the necessity of doing what one thinks is right even in the face of universal opposition, and the need to pursue knowledge even when opposed.

Socrates wrote nothing because he felt that knowledge was a living, interactive thing.

In The Apology, he claims to know nothing at all except that he knows nothing.

You should not say, “I know what Zen is,” or “I have attained enlightenment.” This is also the real secret of the arts: always be a beginner. Be very very careful about this point. If you start to practice zazen, you will begin to appreciate your beginner’s mind. It is the secret of Zen practice.
